SGT RACING HISTORY

SGT Racing first entered the World of motor racing in the mid 1980's with a very successful assault on the Hot Rod Championship.

SGT prepared and maintained a high performance Ford Anglia which had many successes and finished 4th overall in its final Championship against many famous names including Barry Lee. The car was driven by Peter Brown and Silvershield Windscreens sponsored the team.

In 1987, SGT Racing turned its attention to building high specification Kit Cars. The first of which was a Marlin Roadster Sport with a specially tuned MGB engine and much redesigned suspension. This was entered in several Sprints & Hillclimbs. In 1991 the car was completely rebuilt and prepared for the 1992 Super Sport Championship. On a self- sponsorship basis, the car was driven by Ian Bishop-Laggett and finished 2nd in the Championship. It also held the lap record at Pembury.
An AC Cobra replica was SGT Racing's next project. The car was specially prepared for a customer who wanted to compete in drag races. A highly specified engine was imported especially from the USA and modified by SGT for this purpose. The Cobra, which is completely road legal, has set some very impressive times including completing the quarter mile sprint from standstill within 11.3 seconds.

In an effort to return to single seater racing, SGT prepared and managed a National go-karting team. Self sponsored and driven by Aggie Theodosiou, SGT Racing obtained several wins and Aggie has been Club Champion for two years running and 4th nationally.
In 1996 SGT Racing prepared a go-kart Endurance Team who won the qualifying race for Le Mans 1997. The drivers were Aggie Theodosiou, Ian Bishop-Laggett, Keith Segal & William Dyer.
Towards the end of the 1996 season, SGT Racing returned to the single seater arena with Ian Bishop-Laggett driving a hired Formula Vauxhall 1700 for two races at Donnington Park.

Ian obtained 6th place on the grid for the first race and worked his way to 2nd place but engine failure pushed him back to finish 6th. In the second race Ian was on pole position and went on to gain 1st place.

In 1997, SGT Racing entered a Formula Renault 1700 in the BARC Formula Renault Championship. The BARC championship is a proper 'wings and slicks' category with high specification cars that are capable of being set-up specifically for the different race circuits and conditions. SGT Racing enjoyed limited success on a very small budget but gained a great deal of experience and data from the various circuits.

Following on from this experience, in 1998, SGT signed Aggie Theodosiou to compete within the BARC Formula Renault Championship, but his primary sponsor, The National Bank of Cyprus, pulled out of the deal. For the rest of the year, SGT Racing tested other drivers but although they were very talented they were not able to raise the necessary sponsorship to compete.
